Repositories of global health data

We refer to the following repositories of global health data on different pages of this website:

Demographic and Health Survey Program

The DHS Program undertakes nationally representative surveys designed to collect data on monitoring and impact evaluation indicators important for individual countries and for cross-country comparisons. DHS is authorized to distribute, at no cost, unrestricted survey data files for legitimate academic research. Registration is required for access to data. See the demography page.

Global Health Data Exchange

Global Health Data Exchange maintains a comprehensive catalog of surveys, censuses, vital statistics, and other health-related data. This includes access to GBD and other data collected by the Institute of Health Metrics and Evaluation. See the country production and use of data page.

INDEPTH

The INDEPTH site shares data collected by INDEPTH members maintaining demographic and health surveillance sites in Africa, Asia and Oceana. This repository provides well documented anonymized longitudinal microdata from these Centres available to data users. See the demography page.

International Household Survey Network Catalog

The International Household Survey Network Catalog provides searchable metadata from thousands of surveys (all sectors including health) and censuses conducted in low- and middle-income countries. See the household surveys page.

IPUMS

IPUMS International is dedicated to collecting and distributing census data from around the world. The project goals are to collect and preserve data and documentation, harmonize data, and disseminate the harmonized data free of charge. See the censuses and demography pages

Google

Google dataset search  enables anyone to find relevant datasets based on input keywords. Unlike domain-specific tools, like Data.gov, which work on specific datasets curated by the provider, Dataset Search operates more generically, directing users to the site where the data are hosted.

National statistical offices. The United Nations Statistics Division has developed a central repository of country profiles of statistical systems. The country profiles include, among others, a brief history of the country’s statistical system, legal basis, the statistical programme and much more. The site links to websites of national statistical offices. Most of which provide access to census and some survey data.

UNICEF

UNICEF’s Multiple Indicator Cluster Surveys Download reports of MICS surveys and request access to available datasets. Archives can be downloaded for select surveys. See the household surveys page.

WHO Multi-country Studies Data Archive

The World Health Survey was implemented by WHO in 2002–2004 in partnership with 70 countries to generate information on the health of adult populations and health systems. The total sample size in these cross-sectional studies includes over 300 000 individuals. Survey materials and data are available through the WHO World Health Survey Data Archive. See the household surveys page

World Bank Micro Data Library

The World Bank Micro Data Library operates as a portal for datasets originating from the World Bank and other international, regional and national organizations. These contributions make up the Central Microdata Catalog, which can also be viewed and searched by collection. Microdata are available on request. Unit-level data are obtained from sample surveys, censuses, and administrative systems.
